Young Farmers and Ranchers Sacramento Legislative Trip
On March 18, 2019, the Allan Hancock College Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau Young Farmers and Ranchers Club embarked on a three day legislative trip to Sacramento. The first day of the trip consisted of meeting with Mel Machado, Director of Member Relations at Blue Diamond Growers. Mel gave the YF&R club an overview of Blue Diamond Growers, along with great career advice.
The following day was filled legislative visits, beginning with the California Farm Bureau Federation headquarters. Here the students were given an overview into the work that the CFBF legislative staff tackles. Next, the YF&R club had an exciting meeting with Secretary Karen Ross at the California Department of Food and Agriculture headquarters. At this meeting, the students got the chance to individually introduce themselves and express their career goals to the Secretary. Following the introductions, the students were delighted
to hear Secretary Ross describe her career background and answer their questions. The Young Farmers and Ranchers club then visited the Capitol and met with several state leaders, such as Assemblymember Monique Limon and Senator Hannah Beth Jackson.
The final day of trip was centered on Ag Day at the Capitol. The theme for this year’s Ag Day was “Centennial Celebration: 100 Years of Agriculture Leadership.” Multiple booths were set up, highlighting the different areas of agriculture in the State. The YF&R students enjoyed getting a glimpse of the various commodities and agricultural organizations in the state. The Young Farmers and Ranchers had a great time learning the importance of legislation and how it impacts agriculture. The students hope to take this knowledge and use it in their educational and professional careers to help “Keep Ag Alive in the 805.”
