An annual Summer Ag Seminar will be held in June. The Summer Agricultural Institute (SAS) is an intensive three-day seminar for Santa Barbara County educators of all grade levels and subjects and is offered for credit. It teaches about agriculture’s value in today’s world and justifies why young people need to become more fully aware of its impact on day-to-day living. Emphasis is placed on incorporating agricultural information into existing classroom curriculum.
Ag Pen Pals will link classrooms and farm families from Santa Barbara County. Farmers and ranchers exchange letters with school children. The farm families explain what they do, why and how at the various seasons of the year. They write the first letter and the school children write back with their questions. The farm families answer the questions and the letters go back and forth. Farm families and classes commit to writing at least three times during the school year, but many will write much more frequently.
The GAATE Foundation will offer mini garden grants for use in classroom programs promoting agricultural literacy. The grants are available for Kindergarten-Grade 12.
Scholarships and Saving Bonds will be awarded to students who meet the requirements. The Scholarship Program was organized to give financial aid to students with a desire to pursue a career in the agricultural industry. The scholarships are awarded annually based upon academic achievement, career goals, extracurricular activities, determination, leadership skills, and a commitment to study agriculture. There can be up to three scholarships awarded each year, one for $1000 and two for $500 each.

The GAATE Foundation is the education affiliate of the Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau. The Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau, the county’s largest farm organization, works to protect family farms and ranches on behalf of more than 1,800 members.
Our food and fiber system is facing many challenges. Dealing with those challenges is crucial to keeping the industry competitive in the world market. A vision of a strong, viable agriculture will not happen unless we lay a sound foundation for it now. You can help.
The Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau GAATE Foundation is a 501(c)(3) affiliate of the Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau established in 2005 to strive to promote and increase awareness and understanding of agriculture among Santa Barbara County’s educators, students and the general public. Our vision is to foster an appreciation of agriculture by all Santa Barbara County residents.
The GAATE Foundation has four major components:
K-12 Classroom Education
Consumer Education and
Farmer to Farmer Outreach
As the public becomes further and further removed from the production of food and fiber, it becomes more important that educational programs and materials are available to create an understanding of the industry.
Financial support for the foundation comes from individual donors, agricultural organizations, and corporations/foundations. By working together, we can support agricultural research and education for the benefit of all.
To reach these goals we will begin by:
Sponsoring “Ag Day’s” for elementary aged students, their teacher and parents at locations in North and South County. These hands on days will delight even the most timid of students.
