Ag Pen Pal Program
The Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau’s GAATE Foundation
is looking ahead to agriculture’s future and we need your help. The GAATE Foundation’s Ag Pen Pal Program educates students and teachers about their food, fiber and fuel through creating a personal connection between a farmer or rancher and a classroom. The ultimate goal of the pen pal program is to increase agricultural literacy in the county.
As a farmer or rancher, the only requirements for the program are that you write or email your assigned classroom at least 3 times per year—fall, winter and spring. In addition to letters and emails, you could also send videos or photographs from your operation, send seed or fiber samples of what is grown on your land or even make a visit to the classroom. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to match a pen pal with a classroom that is within a drivable distance, so visiting your classroom via Skype is another option to make an impact on the students. Keep in mind also that commodity boards and associations are an excellent resource for free samples that you can forward on to your classroom.
As a classroom, the only requirements for the program are that you write or email your assigned farmer/rancher at least 3 times per year—fall, winter and spring. In addition to letters and emails, you could ask questions about everyday life on the ranch, send photos of yourselves and your classroom or send your farmer/rancher classroom projects that you have made for them. In addition to the information you will learn directly from your pen pal, Santa Barbara County Farm Bureau will provide your classroom with some fun and exciting agricultural lesson plans that meet state standards.
Ag Pen Pals can play a major role in strengthening agricultural awareness and we must all do our part to spread the word. Please review the attached registration form.
